Leo had to force his steps to slow as he led Larissa away from the envoy’s home. Part of him wanted nothing more than to put distance between him and the loathsome secretary. He could not remember a time when anyone had dared speak so disrespectfully to him.

But if von Grub happened to look out the window, Leo would never have wanted to give him the impression he was running away.

“That did not seem helpful,” Larissa said as they headed for Park Lane.

“Helpful enough,” he told her. “He delighted in hinting of the power he and his king hold over us, even to the point of being familiar with your king. If he had known of the theft of the jewels, he would have hinted at that as well.”

She was rubbing at her glove, where von Grub had dared to kiss her hand, as if she would remove every trace of his touch. “I suppose you’re right. But that means we still have no idea what happened to the jewels. Mr. Hollingsworth would appear to be our only hope. I’m so sorry, Leo.”

They had reached busy Park Lane. Beyond the passing carriages, lorries, and horses, the trees of Hyde Park stood like a green wall, protecting the lawns and ponds beyond.

He took her hand. “You have no reason to apologize. This situation was none of your making. I am only grateful you chose to involve yourself on our behalf. I should be the one to apologize if anything he said or did upset you.”

Her gaze dropped to where his thumb was making circles on her glove. “I have no idea what possessed him to kiss my hand. I certainly did not give him leave.”

They were in full view of every passing stranger, but Leo couldn’t stop the words from coming out of his mouth. “Would you give me leave?”

She sucked in a breath, and, for a moment, he feared he’d overstepped. But then she nodded.

Humbled, honored, he raised her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss against her knuckles. Something inside him hitched. A similar tremor went through her arm. And he knew a kiss on the hand would never be enough.

He bent closer, gaze on her rosy lips. The scent of orange blossoms swept away all other thoughts except the need to kiss her. She raised her gaze to his, and he was certain he saw a desire matching his own. When she leaned toward him, he met her to caress her lips with his own. So soft, so warm. Ah, but this was perfection.

She pulled back and opened her eyes to gaze at him in wonder.

“You were right,” he murmured, lifting a hand to touch her cheek. “Playing a part does allow you to do things you would not have dared otherwise.”

“Yes,” she murmured back. “So I’ve noticed.”

With a rattle, the solicitor’s carriage drew to a stop in front of them. Leo could have wished her uncle to the moon, but he forced his hand to fall. Her face flushed crimson, she allowed him to hand her up into the coach.
